Alcaston Gallery is proud to present new paintings by senior artists and elders Peter Mungkuri OAM and Alec Baker in Nganana Ngura Nganampa Ninti - We Know Our Country Well.

Nganana Ngura Nganampa Ninti - We Know Our Country Well showcases the immense knowledge of Country, culture, and history held by these two important senior men, both of whom were actively involved in the land rights movement for their ancestral Country and campaigned for the return of land ownership to the Yankunytjatjara and Pitjantjatjara peoples.

Accentuating each artists’ distinctive style, this collection conveys the unparalleled reverence and profound understanding Baker and Mungkuri have for their Country, and the broader Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of Central Australia.

Peter Mungkuri OAM is a Yankunytjatjara elder and cultural leader within the Indulkana community and across the APY Lands. A respected senior artist, Mungkuri’s intricate and distinctive paintings of trees and desert landscapes pulsate with an energy and vitality that reveal a consummate knowledge for his beloved Ngura (Country).

In 2020 Mungkuri was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in recognition for his service to Australian Visual Arts, and to the community of Indulkana where he serves as a mentor to young people, teaching younger generations cultural law and passing down traditional stories in order to keep his culture alive.

Mungkuri was named the winner of the 2017 Hadley’s Art Prize presented by the Hadley’s Orient Hotel in Hobart, Tasmania and was recently selected as a finalist for the 38th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards and for the Wynne Prize presented by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This year, Mungkuri was featured in the Art Gallery of NSW’s Longing For Home exhibition, curated from the gallery’s permanent collection, and in Tree Story, a major exhibition presented by the Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) in Melbourne.
