Previous Exhibition / Galuma Maymuru Mother Cloud
Alcaston Gallery, in conjunction with Buku Larrnggay Mulka Artists, Northern Territory, is thrilled to present new carved and painted sculptures by Galuma Maymuru, the only surviving daughter of the great artist, Narritjin.

Galuma was one of the first Yolngu women to be instructed to paint (by her father) the sacred clan designs that were previously the domain of high ranking men.

In this exhibition, Mother Cloud (in reference to the maternal wet season), Galuma Maymuru embraces sacred designs used in Yolngu ceremonial body painting for women to portray the sacred woman Nyapilingu in the form of wapitja, digging stick or sceptre.

As Will Stubbs (Coordinator, Buku Larrnggay Mulka Artists, NT) writes:

These works by Galuma Maymuru are the latest offering from Yolngu people towards sharing their understanding of the nature of reality.... Her knowledge is women’s knowledge as manifest in her digging stick or sceptre which is in turn shaped to as a portrait of her.

We welcome Galuma Maymuru to our stable of artists with her first exhibition at Alcaston Gallery, Mother Cloud.
