For Eubena Nampitjin, the most renowned artist in the Balgo community in the Great Sandy Desert, Western Australia, esteemed Law woman and proclaimed ‘Queen of the Desert’, painting is like her second language. She paints persistently with passion and dedication, weaving stories from the Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) as well as her personal history and knowledge.
Eubena Nampitjin is considered to be a leading female contemporary Indigenous artist, having been awarded the Telstra Open Section Painting Category at the 15th National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Award in 1998, and was again a finalist at the Awards in 2011. Her work features in public institutions and private collections both around Australia and internationally, as well hanging in major exhibitions including Yiwarra Kuju: The Canning Stock Route at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra, and Art & Soul at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, both in 2010.
Her daughter, Jane Gimme is a constant companion, and whilst their paintings are aesthetically different, Mother and Daughter paint country and culture in a contemporary way that uniquely passes on the phenomena we have been fortunate to witness in our lifetime.
