Beverly Knight, October 2023

When I grew up in Melbourne in an era of huge migration to our country, my friends consisted of many nationalities including Greek, Italian, Maltese, Ukrainian and Russian; yet surprisingly, I did not meet or speak to a First Nations Australian person until my 20s. Looking back, I was recently reminded of the artist Ronald Bull, who was not only my first introduction to a First Nations artist in the early 1970s but rather my first real encounter with an Indigenous Australian person.

My interest in art subsequently pointed me in the late 1970s to the remarkable art of the Pintupi and Anmatyerre peoples in Western and Central Australia - life changing for sure!

Back then meeting and speaking to the remarkable Papunya artists meant going bush to remote destinations thousands of miles away from my home. I was welcomed and met as family, and then as our friendship grew, I reciprocated with artists and family visiting my home in Melbourne.

From 1983 the art of the Papunya Tula artists was site specific artwork in our restaurants in Collins Street Melbourne, but this is where I also began to experience racism; a daily occurrence back then.

Through respectful and considered discussions (YES, talking and listening!) in 1988 CAAMA, an Aboriginal organisation in Alice Springs, asked me to open an art gallery in Melbourne to represent Northern Territory artists.

I called on my great friend, artist and activist, the late Lin Onus, to give advice. I similarly called on my new friend and Marra artist, the late and great Ginger Riley Munduwalawala from Arnhem Land for advice.

Thirty-five years later I still seek advice and talk to many First Nations people. Yet, I have noticed a ‘brick wall’ of sorts building over the years; blocking, interfering, or controlling that advice. Their voices fading and information monitored; a brick wall built by non-First Nations people, perhaps with good intent but with ambition to control the conversation.

Racism was a key focus also when I was a Director of the Essendon Football Club from 1993 to 2010. Back then I had the voice of champion AFL players Michael Long and Che Cockatoo Collins advising me and working together for the game – as Michael says: share the love!

The invitation to talk and listen (YES, conversations are reciprocal!) to our members of Parliament and their Executive, our First Nations community representatives have offered such a generous invitation to explore their needs, as well as take responsibility for outcomes.

The politicisation of the Voice debate was noted from day one of our new Government. Oh how I wish a more bipartisan approach could have been resolved even if it meant an extra term wait.

I hear and understand some of the NO campaign issues; after all, Jacinta Nampitjinpa Price and her mother Bess Price I have known for a long time (Jacinta did work experience at Alcaston Gallery many years ago!) I have similarly witnessed many great things that Warren Mundine has done for his people. But the compelling invitation from the YES campaign and its Statement from the Heart beams with generosity and sincerity; and I for one will rejoice if our Constitution is enshrined to recognise our 65,000 year history once and for all.

Marcia Langton, Pat Anderson, Rachel Perkins and Megan Davis are women of such high regard and respect, therefore an ear surely is appropriate! Knowing them and the fact I have not walked in their shoes but rather alongside them for many years, I really struggle with the terrifying racism aimed at them when all they really want is a better life for their people and Constitutional recognition.

Most importantly a YES vote presents an opportunity for us to come together as a nation to support the Constitutional amendment to recognise the self-determination of First Nations people and communities in Australia.

A NO vote assists the building of that brick wall that First Nations people experience daily, blocking out true discussions and moving forward together. I could go on about the history of walls but thank you for reading this far. I will be voting YES.

I can now report that we are on track to be very pleased with our results (we call it "Year 3 of Covid"), which directly impacted our artists and secure jobs for art worker staff. In this last year in particular some of our remote community artists faced lockdowns not faced before including the closure of art centres. But all is good! Alcaston Gallery and art centre staff do go the extra mile to act for artists especially presenting online and real exhibitions to our vast worldwide collector base.
