NAOMI HOBSON: KANICHI - ON TOP PEOPLE

20-Sep-2016 - 15-Oct-2016

Alcaston Gallery is delighted to present the fifth solo exhibition of Naomi Hobson, whose exciting paintings has seen her become one of Alcaston Gallery’s most sought after artists. Continually pushing the boundaries of her practice, Hobson has created a dynamic, strong body of work that represents a growing confidence and maturity as a contemporary painter.

Naomi Hobson was announced winner of The 39th Alice Arts Prize: National Contemporary Art Award for 2016. Judge and Director of the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery for Modern Art Chris Saines said of the winning work High Tide, 2015, “it celebrates a sense of place through an all-over form of pictorial organization and an unerring painterly-ness that almost collapses Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives, making this work as evocative of country as it is of the linearity and pictorial rhythms of an Ian Fairweather.”

Naomi Hobson is a finalist in the prestigious Geelong Contemporary Art Prize 2016. In 2015 she exhibited in GOMA Q: Contemporary Queensland Art at the Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery for Modern Art and ArtNow Far North Queensland at the Cairns Regional Gallery.

Naomi has recently been featured in Art Collector magazine, and Artist Profile magazine, in which she discussed her stylistic development; “I can be sitting at a place in my country and that place will come to me as a colour. I connect colours with places and stories…In my recent works I have been exploring the spatial vastness and openness of my country and its physical objects.”

Living and working in Coen, Cape York Peninsula, her natural environment are constant sources of creative inspiration. “My country has inspired me to become an artist, the colours and pattern of nature itself, stories from the past, the unique transformation of the land over the seasons…and my own special places that are etched in my memory, these are places I regularly visit.  It is through my art I aim to reflect and share with others, in a contemporary way, my stories, culture and my country.    My styles also reflect my individuality... I want my work to tell my stories in an innovative way, I want to introduce new work, to maintain a point of difference, I am wary to re-define and not recycle.”

Naomi Hobson has been selected as a finalist for the third year running in the 33rd Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award. Her work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Araluen Art Collection, Artbank, and notable corporate and private collections
