Alcaston Gallery is pleased to present new ceramics and paintings by CARLENE THOMPSON. In her exhibition Kalaya Ngura – Emu Country, Carlene has created innovative new work that alludes to her Father’s Country, in which the creation being is ‘Kalaya’, or emu. This exhibition highlights the cultural richness that Carlene possesses as a proud Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara woman, as the intergenerational transfer of Indigenous and cultural knowledge is a priority for her, particularly the passing of knowledge down to her daughters.

Carlene Thompson started painting at Ernabella art centre in 2007 and quickly developed a unique individual style, particularly with regards to her ceramic art practice. In recent times, Ernabella Arts has nurtured ceramicists to a very high level of practice, and Carlene Thompson is one of their success stories. More recently Carlene has expanded her art practice to include subtle and sophisticated paintings that reflect her country and culture.

Her distinctive, contemporary technique in working with stoneware ceramics has gained her widespread recognition, having recently exhibited alongside major potters of the Asia Pacific at the Vivian Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. Carlene is also the recipient of a coveted arts funding grant from the Australia Council for the Arts, which helped facilitate this wonderful exhibition.

Most recently Carlene Thompson was shortlisted for the 36th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.
