Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present the third annual solo exhibition of new paintings by YARITJI YOUNG.

Drawing inspiration from her father, the highly respected and esteemed artist MICK WIKILYIRI, Yaritji uniquely portrays her father’s beloved country surrounding Amata in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands of far north South Australia.

Her vibrant, contemporary works offer a representation of country, spirituality and a rich family history, particularly with her interpretation of Tjala or the Honey Ant Dreaming, which is an important creation story for the Pitjantjatjara people. Her impressive use of bright, luminescent colour reflect the stunning landscape and sky of country, with all its wonderous colours, combined with vigorous brush strokes that seem to dance across the canvas. You can’t help but think Yaritji Young has enjoyed every moment of creating each work.

Yaritji Young is the eldest of the five Ken sisters who worked collaboratively with her on family canvases to great acclaim, winning the prestigious 2016 Wynne prize and the 2018 Adelaide Biennale commission.

This year Yaritji has been named a finalist again in the prestigious Wynne Prize 2019 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney and in the 36th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards Exhibition at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin.

The impact of such an important artists in Australian Art  has seen several prominent collections in Australia and oversees already acquire her paintings including the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide, South Australia; Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Sydney; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane , Singapore Art Museum, Singapore and the Fondation Opale, Switzerland.
