The colour and surface of dilapidated corrugated iron walls are the source of inspiration for this latest series of paintings.

In 2018 I went on a road trip from Darwin to Tennant Creek for a fellowship project exploring my early childhood years at Elliott, a small town on the Stuart Highway, almost halfway between Alice Springs and Darwin. The Newcastle Waters Historic Township, situated about 25 kilometres north of Elliott, was one of the places visited.

When I walked through the rooms in the abandoned Junction Hotel, I was captivated with the textures of the pastel coloured paint still remaining on the corrugated iron sheets that had been used to build the hotel in the 1930s.

I imagined the heydays of Newcastle Waters when it was a thriving township at the junction of three major overland stock routes and the Junction Hotel was a welcome watering hole for residents, neighbouring cattle stations, stockmen and travellers. Then road trains replaced droving during the 1960s and Newcastle Waters turned into a virtual ghost town without the economic activity that it had depended on.

Thoughts about the derelict buildings, landscape and social history stayed with me and the pastel colours became a visual reference for painting about interiors and forsaken places.
