Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present new ceramics and paintings by CARLENE THOMPSON in her third solo exhibition, Kanpi Country.

Since starting her artistic career in 2007 at Ernabella art centre, Carlene Thompson has developed a unique, sophisticated style in her multidisciplinary art practice, with her highly contemporary ceramics and paintings that beautifully reflect her country and culture.

Kanpi Country alludes to her Father’s country in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunyjatjara (APY) Lands in far north South Australia with her vivid depictions of the Kalaya’, or emu, a powerful creation being in traditional Anangu culture. These works highlight the cultural richness that Carlene possesses as a proud Pitjantjatjara/Yankunytjatjara woman, and her focus on the intergenerational transfer of cultural ties, particularly the passing of knowledge down to her daughters.

Her distinctive, contemporary technique in working with stoneware ceramics has gained her widespread recognition, having recently exhibited alongside major potters of the Asia Pacific at the Vivian Gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. Carlene was also the recipient of a coveted arts funding grant from the Australia Council for the Arts in 2019.
