International Education Services Exhibition Opening

Alcaston Gallery is delighted that our Queensland artists Naomi Hobson and Claudia Moodoonuthi have been acquired by the wonderful International Education Services Indigenous Art Collection, Brisbane and currently feature in their exhibition Kinship, Country & Women's Australian Indigenous Art, from 9 November - 23 December 2016.

Opened by Mr Chris Evason, Managing Director of International Education Services and Professor Tim Dunne, Executive Dean of the University of Queensland, the opening event featured an Indigenous art masterclass presented by University of Queensland Associate Professor Sally Butler followed by a tour of the Collection.

Present at the opening on Wednesday 9 November was Claudia Moodoonuthi, whose work Native Title, 2015, previously exhibited in the exhibition Woven Identity at the Cairns Regional was on display.

Mr Chris Evason said, “The IES art collection is a practical educational resource used within our curriculum which provides international students with a starting point to consider the circumstances and characteristics of Australia’s indigenous people. Using indigenous art to teach overseas visitors about Australian aboriginal culture, focusses attention on positive aspects of culture and indicates a thriving, multi-faceted society; particularly in the specific focus on younger contemporary female artists pushing the boundaries of their art. That’s why we are delighted to include Naomi and Claudia’s wonderful works in our collection and were thrilled to have Claudia attend our opening exhibition."

Len Fox Painting Award Exhibition

Congratulations to artists Naomi Hobson, Karen Mills, Alec Baker and Shirley Purdie who have been chosen as finalists in the 2016 Len Fox Painting Award. Held at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum, Victoria, the $50,000 major acquisitive art prize is generously funded by Len Fox (1905-2004) in celebration of the life and work of his uncle Emanuel Phillips Fox (1865-1915).

The award invites artists to interpret the plein air, impressionist style of Emanuel Phillips Fox and his favoured subjects of the Australian landscape and scenes of everyday life in a contemporary context and manner. From Alcaston's stable of artists, the works exhibited depict a diversity of interpretation and subject, bringing to the Award scenes from Coen, far north Queensland; Sturt Creek Station, in the East Kimberly, Western Australia; Indulkana, in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands, far north South Australia; and from Warmun, in the Kimberly region, Western Australia.

The exhibition will be open to the public at the Castlemaine Art Gallery and Historical Museum from 9 October – 31 December 2016.
