Nonggirrnga Marawili is regarded as one of the most important artists working at Buku-Larrnggay Mulka at Yirrkala in the Northern Territory. Her highly sophisticated bark paintings, Larrakitj, works on paper and prints reflect an engrained, natural understanding of her culture, history and environment.

This major solo exhibition and accompaying publication at the Art Gallery of New South Wales will span the artist’s career with a focus on the last five years.

From Bark to Neon: Indigenous Art from the NGV Collection celebrates Indigenous art in Australia. It looks at major artists across time and place who have been at the forefront in creating new forms of expression and in maintaining and regenerating customary cultural practices and iconography. Great individual artists, such as, Paddy Compass Namadbara, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Rover Thomas, Trevor Nickolls, Lin Onus, Emily Kam Kngwarray, Sally Gabori, Brook Andrew and Destiny Deacon have shaped and transformed the face of Indigenous art in Australia and inspired many artists to follow their example.

Congratulations to Shirley Macnamara and UQ Art Museum on the opening of 'Layered Threads',

‘A landscape of spinifex rings’ is how this acclaimed senior Indigenous artist from north-west Queensland describes the suspended woven work that forms the centrepiece of her exhibition. Working with Triodia (spinifex), a native grass common to this arid landscape, Shirley Macnamara’s contemporary fibre art stands for generations of traditional knowledge, the resilience of her people, and the need to care for Country.

In works comprising spinifex, emu feathers, bone and ochre, the artist draws attention to the environment and the histories concerning her people, including Aboriginal military service.

Macnamara’s woven vessel, Nyurruga Muulawaddi, which won the Wandjuk Marika Memorial 3D Award at the 34th Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in 2017, is a highlight of the exhibition.

The exhibition is curated by Michele Helmrich, Associate Director (Curatorial) The University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane and was officially opened by Diane Moon, Curator, Indigenous Fibre Art, QAGOMA.

During the exhibition, Shirley Macnamara will undertake a residency at the UQ Art Museum, generously supported by the Copyright Agency Cultural Fund.

Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to announce that Sally Gabori is currently featured in an important travelling survey of art by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders at the National Museum of Modern Art, New Delhi. 

Fresh from a successful showcase at the me Collectors Room in Berlin, the exhibition ‘Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia’ was inaugurated at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi last Friday. 

'Indigenous Australia: Masterworks from the National Gallery of Australia' was initially presented at me Collectors Room, Berlin as part of Australia Now Germany 2017, which presented audiences with the opportunity to experience the range and complexity of Australian culture in Germany.

The exhibition opened last Friday in Delhi as a curtain raiser to Australia Fest - a festival of Australian culture and creativity across India, beginning this September. The exhibition will be open to the public at the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in New Delhi from 15 June – 26 August 2018.
