Over the past months Holding has spent her time in isolation creating work in her studio located in the Goldfields of Central Victoria. This unprecedented period of seclusion and reflection has resulted in a creative outpouring of energy and ideas, enabling Holding to continue her quiet, microscopic observations of the surrounding environment, and her ongoing investigation of its past.

In this area of rich and layered history, this project developed organically with ten small bronze sculptures created at the Garage Art Foundry, a short distance from Holding’s studio. To create these delicate tree sculptures Holding applied the ‘Lost Wax’ process, also referred to as cire-perdue. This ancient method involves building the sculpture positive in wood, which is then painted in wax. A shell is built around it at the Foundry and molten bronze poured in causing the wood and wax to melt out and be replaced by the bronze.

Holding’s masterfully realised sculptures conveys the subtle power and beauty of each individual tree; each iconic silhouette referencing a specific event or location within the artist’s concentrated natural environment, alluding to her innate spiritual and physical connection to the Australian landscape.
