Artist
Jessie Kemarr Peterson
Jessie Kemarr Peterson is one of the most senior painters living and working in Wutunugurra (Epenarra) in the foothills of the Ilytwelepenty (the Davenport Ranges) in the Northern Territory.
In her 90s, Peterson’s artistic career has spanned decades. Her intuitive practice is driven by the concept of the 'everywhen', encompassing the past, present and future within a single moment. Peterson depicts traditional symbols alongside figurative representations of local flora and fauna and paints her memories of the ‘old days’ alongside depictions of contemporary life, interchanging time, perspective and painting styles.
Peterson is best known for her delicately rendered 'Ceremony' paintings, vivid linear compositions that offer rhythmic, shimmering depictions of Wutunugurra and recall ‘women’s ceremony – dancing’.
Having exhibited in group exhibitions nationally and internationally since 2009, Peterson was invited to present her debut exhibition at Alcaston Gallery, Melbourne in 2024. Her work is included in private and public collections, including the Charles Darwin University Art Collection.
