VIEW CATALOGUE

Alcaston Gallery in conjunction with Iwantja Arts, SA proudly invite you to view and acquire new paintings by Betty Muffler which are currently featured in the exhibition Greenworld at Bayside Gallery, Brighton until 13 December 2020.

Betty Muffler is a highly respected Pitjantjatjara/Yankunyjatjara artist and Ngangkari, traditional healer from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in South Australia. Her knowledge of traditional healing was passed down to her from her father and aunties, and she has travelled extensively across the central Australian desert providing support to Anangu with her Ngangkari practice. She has also given presentations at universities, medical conferences and hospitals across Australia, sharing her knowledge of traditional healing practices in the context of contemporary Western medicine.

Her sublime paintings entitled Ngankari Ngura (Healing Country) depict sacred Anangu sites that are relevant to her Ngangkari spirit through luminous lines and motifs within a dynamic composition, highlighting Muffler’s reverence for her country and her people.

In 2017, at the esteemed age of 73, Betty Muffler won the Emerging Artist Award at the Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin.

In September 2020 Betty Muffler’s work was published on the cover of VOGUE AUSTRALIA with an image of her painting Ngankari Ngura (Healing Country). The issue was dedicated to the theme of hope and was the first time an artwork had graced the cover of VOGUE AUSTRALIA in its 60-year history.

In 2021 Betty Muffler has been selected to present new work at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, as part of The National 2021: New Australian Art.

Betty Muffler’s works are included in major art collections in Australia and overseas including the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Australian War Memorial, Canberra; and the Fondation Opale, Switzerland.

These three important paintings by Betty Muffler are currently featured in the major exhibition Greenworld at Bayside Gallery, Brighton until 13 December 2020 and are available for acquisition.
