Alcaston Gallery is thrilled to present Ngayuku Kamiku Ngura - Holding onto Grandmother’s Country, the first solo exhibition of new paintings and ceramic works by Beverly Burton at Alcaston Gallery, one of the most exciting and innovative emerging artists working today at Amata in the Aṉangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of far north-west South Australia.

Beverly Burton's powerful and vibrant linear mark making on her canvas and ceramic artworks is both characteristic to her artistic practice, as well as alluding to her important and influential family lineage including the work of her mother, artist and revered ngangkaṟi Naomi Kantjuriny, and her father, renowned senior artist and respected elder, the late Kunmanara (Hector) Burton. In this new body of work, Burton honours her father's mother by depicting Anumara Piti, her Grandmother’s Country, in what the artist describes as 'the colours of Country'; evoking the desert landscape through the use of red, orange and brown hues, combined with a bright palette of the lush green grasses coming up after rains, and the pink, yellow and white of wildflowers under the shimmering blue sky.

"Ngayulu pulkara pukurarinyi ngayuku kamiku tjukurpaku, panya ngaayuku kamiku tjukurpa kuṉpu... Iritinguru alatjiṯu ngaṟanyi. I am proud because my Grandmother’s story is strong. I paint to remember my Grandmother’s story… That story has been there a long time. That story has been there forever." - Beverly Burton, 2022

In 2022, Burton began to translate her practice from canvas to ceramic, expanding her disciplinary practice alongside other senior women from Tjala Arts in South Australia. The artist collaborated with ceramicist Stephanie James Manttan at the Jam Factory in Adelaide, South Australia to produce a new body of stoneware ceramic artworks as part of the Vessels – Holding onto Tjukurpa project; a project assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

Following her recent announcement as a finalist in the prestigious 2022 Telstra National Indigenous Art Awards presented by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin, Alcaston Gallery is proud to present this accomplished solo exhibition by Beverly Burton, Ngayuku Kamiku Ngura, Holding onto Grandmother’s Country from 20 July - 5 August 2022.
